Student Chromebooks

Frontier Local School District 1:1 Chromebook Initiative

In order to prepare our students for an ever-changing workforce, the Frontier Local School District Board of Education has adopted a technology plan that provides each student with a Chromebook. Each student in grades K through 5 are issued a Chromebook that is stored in a locked charging cart when not being used, while grades 6 through 12 are issued Chromebooks that they take home and keep until the end of the school year, at which time they turn in the Chromebook.

Responsible Use of Chromebooks

Before any student may use any district-issued electronic devices, the student must submit a Student Acceptable Use Policy signed by both the student and a parent or guardian. Students in grades K through 2 do not need to sign the document. Students in grades 6 through 12 must also submit a Chromebook Use Policy (Grades 6-12) before they can be issued a Chromebook. The Chromebook Use Policy must be signed by both the student and a parent or guardian.

All students who use a Chromebook, whether in the classroom or at home, are expected to treat the device with care. If a Chromebook is not working correctly or is broken, do not attempt to make any repairs. Turn the Chromebook in to a teacher, Principal, or the Technology Department. If the device is broken or defective due to typical use, no charge will be applied. If the device is broken or defective due to abuse, the student will be charged for the repair or replacement of the Chromebook. These charges will be applied to the student's school fees and the parent or guardian will be notified. This applies to Chromebook chargers as well.

The district does not offer insurance directly, but we have partnered with a 3rd party insurance company called School Device Coverage. They offer Chromebook insurance for families to purchase Chromebook insurance for devices that are issued to students in grades 6 through 12. The application form and coverage flyer are listed below. The form and payment must be mailed directly to the address listed on the application form. The school does not process this and will not accept it on your behalf.

Content Filtering

All data traffic for student and staff devices will be filtered. We use a cloud-based filter called GoGuardian. GoGuardian tracks everyone individually and blocks specific and inappropriate content, as defined by the district administration. When an attempt to access inappropriate material is made, whether successful or unsuccessful, the appropriate Principal and IT staff will be notified automatically.

The district also uses an additional feature of GoGuardian called Beacon. Beacon is a tool that uses AI and specified criteria to monitor all students for self-harm activities online. This would include such things as searching for methods of self-harm, writing a document with wording that depicts self-harm, and any email that contains such material. When triggered, a technician from Goguardian will notify appropriately designated staff member via email and/or phone if necessary. This is monitored 24 hours a day continuously.
